grief & loss counselling

experience rest and healing

Grief and loss counselling focuses on moving through the grieving experience after some kind of loss. Previously, it was common to think of the grieving process as a series of stages, but now we know that grief is a much more complex and personal process. Grief is a normal reaction to loss, but it can be very destabilizing and confusing.

  • sadness, anger, disbelief, confusion, apathy, relief, longing, regret, numbness, etc.

  • difficulty focusing on things other than the loss

  • guilt and/or self-blame

  • avoiding people, places, and things that remind you of the loss

  • feeling like you’ve lost a sense of meaning or direction

  • fatigue, trouble sleeping, and/or changes in appetite

  • trouble thinking or making decisions

Grief can look like:

  • the death of a friend, family member, or pet

  • loss of a significant relationship, such as a break up or divorce

  • pregnancy-related loss

  • loss of health or physical function

  • loss of life roles, such as being a student or active parent

  • career-related loss, such as unemployment or demotion

  • loss of country, such as immigration or refugee situations

  • major life transitions that involve letting go of familiar routines and environments

  • impending losses

Loss can look like:

Who grief & loss counselling is for:

An Asian woman sits on a couch and smiles at the camera, she's holding a blue pillow
  • Maybe you’ve experienced the end of an important relationship and you’re feeling all tangled up inside and totally unsure of yourself

  • Maybe you’re going through a big life change and are surprised by all of the disruption it has brought into your life

  • Maybe you don’t know where to start with processing a loss and would like some gentle guidance

  • Maybe there’s been a lot of death in your family or community throughout your life and you don’t quite know where to start with unpacking all of that

  • Maybe everything that’s happening in the world feels like one giant loss on top of another and you don’t know how to hold all of that as it keeps happening

Grief & loss therapy can help with:

A man sits on a chair and is looking to the side, he's smiling
  • moving through shock and making sense of the loss

  • navigating the tsunamis and waves of grief

  • recognizing how the loss has impacted you and your life

  • actually feeling sadness without getting stuck in it

  • honouring the loss

  • managing relationships while navigating grief and loss

  • releasing guilt and shame

  • expressing frustration or anger related to the loss in a safe and supported way

  • not feeling so alone in the grief and loss experience

What to expect in a session:

A woman is sitting at a table and smiling
  • I’ll be right there alongside you, sitting with you throughout the whole process

  • We’ll talk about what is normal in grief: the mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional effects

  • We’ll take a look at what you were taught about grief and address expectations about the grieving process

  • I’ll help you cope with the overwhelming feelings that can come along with grief and loss

  • We’ll get to know the different parts of grief, including how and when they show up

  • We can explore the practice of continuing bonds, or how to maintain a bond with the loss
