interpersonal neurobiology

understanding your brain, changing your patterns

Interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB) is a neuroscience-informed approach to therapy that explores how our brain, body, and our relationships interact to shape our well-being. By understanding these connections, we can change our responses to stress and create healthier relationships.

IPNB counselling might be a good fit if:

A woman with dark and teal hair, wearing a black tank top with graphics, sitting and smiling indoors near a large plant and colorful posters on the window.
  • You feel stuck in the same patterns and want to change, but aren’t sure where to begin

  • You’re curious about how your brain works and want to shift unhelpful thinking habits

  • You’re looking for a practical, neuroscience-informed approach to therapy that can be applied in your everyday life

  • You want to explore how your relationships and past experiences have shaped your brain and nervous system

  • You want to feel more in control when things get stressful, rather than falling into the same reactive responses

IPNB therapy can help with:

A woman with black hair smiling outdoors, wearing a black hoodie with large white letters.
  • identifying patterns in your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours

  • exploring why you tend to feel or react a certain way when you’re stressed (anxious, overwhelmed, shut down, angry, etc.)

  • rewiring fight, flight, or freeze responses so you can respond differently

  • understanding what safety, regulation, and connection look like for your unique nervous system

  • making sense of how your past experiences have shaped your brain and body

  • reframing and shifting patterns that feel difficult or stuck

  • learning to recognize and respond to signals from your nervous system

  • strengthening pathways of kindness, compassion, and resilience

What to expect in a session:

A young Asian man with short black hair, wearing a green Champion hoodie, sitting at a light wooden table with a coffee drink in front of him in a cafe or restaurant setting.
  • We’ll practice integration - connecting different parts of your internal system to support healing and balance

  • I’ll help you understand the links between your thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and relationships

  • We’ll explore how your past experiences have shaped your present-day responses

  • I’ll guide you in understanding how stress impacts your brain and body, and how to move through it more effectively

  • Together, we’ll create a plan to change brain patterns that are causing problems, and strengthen those that support your well-being
